The ensemble was formed in 2013 after the Trafalgar Theatre Group requested 16th Century music to be sung as part of a play, and Madrigals performed for a themed dinner. The groups’ performances were adjudicated as part of the Royal Navy Theatre Association Festival, including performances from all over the UK and other Commonwealth Countries – their musical contribution won the “Best music” prize in the festival.
Having been very pleasantly surprised with their prize, the group decided that they would stay together and continue to perform under the name of InCantus.
The group can comprise between 8 to 16 singers at any one time depending on the demands of the music being performed. The group aims to take on works not regularly performed in Gibraltar and likes to tackle challenges that stretch musical boundaries as well as that of their audiences.
One of their most noted acclaims was an invitation to perform in New York under the auspices of Distinguished Concerts International New York (DCINY). DCINY explained how they had heard a recording of InCantus performing “Northern Lights” by composer Ola Gjeilo on their YouTube channel (Link below). Impressed with this performance, InCantus were invited to take part in the collaboration project for 2020 in New York - an evening dedicated to the Music of Ola Gjeilo with choirs from all over the world and the Composer himself taking part from the piano.
InCantus members had the privilege to perform alongside The Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra and Andrea Bocelli.
InCantus is an active performing ensemble and covers a wide range of music from the Renaissance era straight through to current day composers.
